Bonfire night! An evening in which we are aware the gunpowder plot happened but dont really remember enough from school to actually blag our way through the facts. Where we hurry through the cold, newly dark nights to friends houses and fields to huddle close, but not too close, to gigantic fires which have been certified as 100% hedgehog free, to watch with childlike wonder as sparks quite literally fly. And what better way to celebrate sitting at home with the mates trying to convince the dog Guy Fawkes isnt trying to blow us up than with a cheeky whisky to warm the soul.
So what will we be sharing with our friends as the sky explodes in a colourful cornucopia of sparkles and noise?
Kirkwall bay – £37.95
A cheeky little independently bottled single malt from Orkney, we can’t tell you which distillery it’s from, but it is particularly famous and has the same initials at Harry Potter. With peaty notes of Bonfire smoke and a fruity vanilla edge this is a great crowd pleaser.
Kilchoman Machir bay £48.95
A fantastic choice from Islay’s smallest and newest distillery, and a great intro into their style. A mixture of ex bourbon and sherry casks makes this an absolute delight with vanilla biscuits, light fruit and wafts of warm peat smoke throughout.
Glenfarclas 15 £56.95
Oh me oh my, once we’ve polished off a few of the smokier drams what better way to go than christmas cake in a glass (not literally) with the super sherried Glenfarclas 15. Hints of Raisins, orange peel, walnuts and dates make this the sweet warmer to end the night on. Not smokey in the slightest and great for those friends who “don’t really like whisky” but insist on drinking it whenever it’s free.
So gather your friends, prep your glassware, designate your official bonfire and firework technician (because it’s no fun when someone looses a finger) and get ready to enjoy standing around in the cold and occasionally going Ohhhhhh.
